Welcome to Anton's Greenhouses, and welcome Spring!
Looking to get a jump on your spring gardening? We have a large variety of seeds from which to choose! Whether you're looking to create a butterfly garden, or start some vegetables, we have soil, seeds and seed trays to get you started!
Here at Anton's, our greenhouses are filling up with hanging baskets, bedding plants and all kinds of annuals. Although it's a bit early to place these plants outdoors, we do know that some of you may be looking to bring home some plants in the coming weeks. Please remember that our greenhouses provide the best home for your future plants until we have consistently warm, sunny days. We've begun hardening off some cold-tolerant plants for you to bring home late March and into April. (See "Gardening Tips" below for how to harden off your new plants.)
At Anton's we carry early-spring, cold-tolerant plants such as Alyssum, Dusty Miller, Pansys, Stock and others. Once hardened off, these early annuals can take a bit of cooler weather.
Later-season, warm-weather plants such as Begonias, Impatiens, Vinca, Tomatoes, Peppers and others are best left to flourish at the greenhouses until late May. This allows for plants to become large and strong before transplant to their new location outdoors.
In addition to landscape plants, we have various house plants to brighten and freshen your interior! How about trying your hand at air plants?
We are currently open Monday through Saturday, so stop in for plants, supplies, or to get your gardening questions answered! As spring approaches, we will be open on Sundays as well.
We greatly appreciate your observance of current social distancing practices during your visit. For your safety we continue to monitor the number of customers at the greenhouses during business hours, as well as maintain a clean and sanitized office area.
We look forward to seeing you!
Hardening Off Your New Plants
Plant damage can occur as a result of weather conditions, that is unless they have been “hardened off”, either here at the nursery, or once you take them home. Many of our plants have been “hardened off” by late spring, but it really depends on the variety of the plant and the time at which our plants have initially been placed outside to begin the process. Plants should be placed outdoors gradually, in order to expose them to wind, direct sunlight and uneven temperatures. New plants need to be protected from the elements for the first few days and nights of this process, perhaps in a cold frame or other protected outdoor space. On cold nights, cover the plants or bring them into a garage, shed or other indoor space. Hardening off can take about a week, to ensure stems and leaves become thick and sturdy. Make sure plants get a bit more sun each day and that the plants stay watered consistently.
